What is the first item I should crochet as a beginner? Answer: Start with something rectangular or square. Scarves and blankets and some shawl/wraps will give you plenty of practice with your tension and various types of stitches. For example, practice the single crochet stitch with something smaller such as a square dish cloth. Then practice the double crochet stitch with a blanket (this will work up way faster than single crochet). Then practice the half double crochet stitch with a scarf.
Once I reached the length I wanted to scarf to be, I added some tassels to finish it off.

As stated in a previous post, if you are new to crochet, always try to start with a yarn that is light in color and a medium weight such as 4 (worsted). Check out some of Lion Brand’s yarns here (sponsored link), especially the Basic Stitch anti-pilling yarn.
Happy Crocheting!
