If you are brand new to crochet, you are in the right place! I try to keep it simple and include as many pictures as possible so that you have a visual example to follow along with. The single crochet stitch is one of the easiest stitches to crochet. Next to the slip knot and chain stitch, the single crochet stitch is the first stitch you should know how to do. Follow this tutorial on how to single crochet for left-handed beginners and you will be well on your way to making beautiful crochet creations in no time!

How to do the Single Crochet Stitch Left-Handed

Step 1: Start by making a slip knot.

Step 2: Chain as many chains that you need to get to your desired width of your project. In my example, I only chained 12 to begin a little swatch.

Step 3: Insert hook into 2nd chain from hook.

Step 4: Pull the working yarn over your hook and pull a loop through the chain your hook is in. You will now have 2 loops on your hook.

Step 5: Pull the working yarn over your hook again and pull it through both loops. You have now created a single crochet stitch!

Step 6: Insert your hook into the next chain.

Step 7: Repeat steps 4 – 6 until you reach the end of your foundation chain.

Now to move on to the next row, you will chain 1, then turn your work.

For the 2nd row, you will just keep repeating steps 4 – 6 from above. The only difference for this row and all the remaining rows is that you will begin by inserting your hook into the first stitch from the hook instead of the second stitch.

This is roughly what it will look like at the end of row 2.

One more beginner tip is that when you are inserting your hook through the stitch below (except for the foundation chain row), you want to make sure you are going through the whole stitch (it looks like a “v” from above) and not just the front or back loop of the stitch (front loop only and back loop only will end up looking completely different than the regular single crochet stitch). Here is a top-view picture where you can see the “v” that you want to single crochet into.
