Materials Needed

Yarn:

  • Head and body: medium weight (#4) white cotton yarn. Any #4 weight cotton yarn will do, but I used Lily Sugar’n Cream (sponsored link) in the color white.
  • Scarf and hat: medium weight (#4) cotton yarn. I used Peaches & Creme in the color Rosemary, but you can use any color you want the hat and scarf to be.
  • Nose: medium weight (#4) cotton yarn. I used I Love This Cotton Yarn in the color Glowing, but any orange colored yarn will do.
  • Mouth: medium weight (#4) cotton yarn. I used Lily Sugar’n Cream (sponsored link) in the color black.

Crochet Hook: I used a 4.5 mm ergonomic crochet hook (sponsored link).

Tapestry Needle: Any blunt tip tapestry or darning needle (sponsored link) for weaving in the ends and joining.

Safety Eyes: Completely optional. You could even use yarn or yarn thread to make the eyes. I have even used puffy paint. But I am loving this safety eye kit (sponsored link) that has different colors and sizes of eyes and noses especially if you make any amigurumi.

Fabric Glue: This is optional as well. I used this to glue the mouth in place. Fabric Fuse (sponsored link) works well.

Scissors: Any pair of yarn friendly scissors (sponsored link) will do.

Notes: This finished snowman is approximately 5 1/2 inches from the top of the hat to the bottom of the body and about 2 1/2 inches wide at the widest part of the body. It is worked in 5 different pieces (6 if you count the hanging string). Chain 1 at beginning of rounds does not count as a single crochet.

Assembly of Snowman Ornament

Join the head to the body:

Thread your tapestry needle with the tail from the body and place the head at the top of the body. Weave the tail from the body into a stitch on the bottom of the head, go back down into a stitch on the top of the body. Go back into a stitch on the bottom of the head. Repeat this a few times until the body and head are secured together. Note: It doesn’t have to look “pretty” at this time because the scarf will be covering this joining.

Body and Head Joined

Join Scarf:

Place the scarf around the neck (between the head and the body) by wrapping it from back to front. Now use your tapestry needle to attach using the Rosemary colored yarn. To do this, place the needle from the back of the snowman and thread through to the front (through the snowman and the front of the scarf). Go back and forth through the scarf to the back of the snowman being sure to attach the scarf to itself on the side that you placed the ends of the scarf. Then end the sewing in the back to make a knot and fasten off.

Join Hat:

Place the hat on the top of the head. The bottom of the hat should line up between the 1st and 2nd row of the top of the head. Using your tapestry needle and the Rosemary colored yarn, attach the hat to the head by weaving from the front of the snowman’s head to a stitch in the back of the hat, back to a stitch in the front of the head, repeat a few times to make sure it is secured all the way across. Try to place the knot to secure between the back of the hat and front of the head so it is not visible.

Place Eyes:

Place the eyes about 1 round under the hat, and 3 stitches apart (or wherever you like how they look). Attach the backs to the safety eyes to secure if you are using safety eyes.

Attach Nose:

Place your nose so that it is in the middle of the eyes about 1 round down from the eyes. Align the nose on the head so that the 2 tails are about 1 round apart. Thread your tapestry needle with one of the tails of the nose. Pull that tail from the nose through to the back of the head. Remove tapestry needle from the yarn. Now thread the other tail of the nose in the tapestry needle and pull that tail through to the back of the head. Remove the tapestry needle and double knot the 2 tails in the back of the head.

Mouth Assembly:

Using black yarn, cut about a 6 inch piece of yarn. First, thread 1 side of the yarn through your tapestry needle. Next, pull the yarn through at the same round of 1 side of the nose and about 1 round below it. Then remove tapestry needle from yarn. Now, thread the other side of the black yarn in the tapestry needle and pull the yarn through at the same round as the other side of the nose and about 1 round below it. Don’t pull it too tight. Remove the tapestry needle and form the mouth so that it makes a small smile shape.

Next, use the fabric glue to glue the smile shape in place. Let the glue set for a couple hours. Then double tie the 2 tails of the black yarn together in back of the head to secure. Be sure not to pull the yarn too tight so that you do not detach the glued mouth from the front.

Ornament Hanger:

First, cut about a 7 or 8 inch string of yarn from the Rosemary (or whatever color you used for the hat) yarn. Next, using your tapestry needle pull one side of the yarn through one of the top stitches of the hat (2nd stitch from the left). Then remove the tapestry needle (holding yarn in place). Now use the tapestry needle to pull the other end through the top stitch of the hat (2nd stitch from the right). Both ends should now be located in the back of the hat. Next, tie the 2 ends together in a double knot. Trim off excess tails. Tuck the little knot in between 2 stitches. I also used a little dab of the fabric glue here to ensure the knot stays tucked in place.

When you are done assembling all of the pieces, make sure all ends are fastened off, weave in all ends and trim excess where necessary.

Now you have this adorable snowman ornament to display or give as a gift!
