Crochet Snowman Applique

Hello fellow crocheters! In this blog post, I’ll take you through the step-by-step process of creating this crochet snowman appliqué that you can use to adorn scarves, hats, blankets, or any other winter-themed creations you have in mind.

If you aren’t a fan of working with crochet thread and a tiny hook, you can always crochet this snowman using larger yarn and a larger hook. It is completely customizable!

Materials

Crochet Thread – All colors in size 10.

Crochet Hook – I used a 1.5 mm ergonomic crochet hook.

Tapestry Needle – Here is a set with different sizes. You will need a smaller one than used for regular worsted weight yarn.

Scissors – A small pair of scissors for cutting the crochet thread.

Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations

Before you begin the pattern, make sure you are familiar with the following crochet stitches and abbreviations. These are in US terms.

Magic Ring = mr. If you aren’t familiar with how to make a magic ring, watch this short video I found on YouTube.

Single crochet = sc

Slip stitch – sl st

Chain = ch

Single crochet Increase = sc inc (place 2 sc’s in one stitch).

Round = rnd

Decrease = dec

Snowman Applique Pattern

This snowman is worked in 4 separate parts. The hat will be crocheted onto the top of the head, so I am not counting that as a “separate” part.

Finished dimensions: About 2 inches tall and 1 inch wide at the widest part of the body.

The body and head are crocheted in a continuous round <<–see my post about how to crochet in a continuous round.

Body:

Use the white crochet thread.

Make a magic ring to begin.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr. Pull mr tight to close.

Rnd 2: Sc inc in each stitch around (12 stitches).

Rnd 3: Sc, sc inc. Repeat around (18 stitches).

Rnd 4: Sc, sc, sc inc. Repeat around (24 stitches). Cut off crochet thread and fasten off leaving a tail long enough to sew the head and body together.

Head:

Use the white crochet thread.

Make a magic ring to begin.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in mr. Pull mr tight to close.

Rnd 2: Sc inc in each stitch around (12 stitches).

Rnd 3: Sc, sc inc. Repeat around (18 stitches). Cut off crochet thread and fasten off.

Join body and head:

Using the tail from the top of the body, thread your tapestry needle and pull up through the bottom stitch of the head. Next, go back down to another stitch on the top of the body, repeat a couple more times to ensure it is attached securely. When finished, make sure to knot to secure. If it is showing a seem, that’s ok because we will be sewing the scarf over the joining.

After you join the body and the head, now is a good time to weave in and trim off the ends on the body and head.

Scarf:

Use the Currant color crochet thread (or color you chose for the hat and scarf).

Chain 21

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each stitch across (20 stitches). Then cut off the crochet thread and fasten off. Make sure to leave a long enough tail to secure the scarf to the snowman.

Attach scarf:

First, wrap your scarf around the head and body joining. Then cross the scarf where you would like it to cross in the front. Next, thread your tapestry needle with the long tail from where you fastened off the scarf. Weave the tail into one of the top loops from the body. Go back into the scarf, then back into a top loop of the body. Work your way up one side and down the other in this way making sure to attach the front of the scarf to the back of the scarf in the back while you are in the middle.

Hat:

Use the Currant color crochet thread (or color you chose for the hat and scarf).

You will be crocheting the hat directly onto the head into the middle top 6 stitches of the head. If you are right-handed, locate the middle 4 stitches and place your hook into the stitch to the right. If you are left-handed (like me), place your hook into the stitch to the left of the middle 4 stitches.

Row 1: Make a slip knot and place it on your hook and pull it through the stitch. Chain 1. Place 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn work. sc dec in first 2 stitches, sc, sc, sc dec in last 2 stitches (4 stitches).

Row 3: Ch 1, turn work, sc dec, sc dec (2 stitches). Ch 1, cut thread and fasten off.

Nose:

Use the orange color crochet thread.

Ch 2

Row 1: Slip stitch into 1st ch, ch 1, cut thread and fasten off. Make sure both tails are long enough to attach the nose to the head.

Using your tapestry needle, thread it with a tail from the nose, pull through the middle stitch of the head. Now thread the needle with the other tail from the nose. Next, position it where you would like it to point to. I positioned mine into the stitch directly to the right of the middle and once I tightened it in the back, it slanted down and a little to the right. Once you get it where you like, double knot the 2 tails together in the back. Now you can trim the orange tails so that they are not in the way when you embroider the eyes and mouth.

Eyes and Mouth:

Use the black crochet thread.

For this part, you will just embroider them in where you would like them positioned. For mine, the outside edges of the eyes ended up in between rounds 2 and 3 of the head and about 1 stitch up from the nose. The mouth started between rounds 2 and 3 of the head and about 2 stitches down from the nose.

Enjoy your finished snowman appliqué!

As we wrap up this crochet project, I hope you’ve discovered the joy of handmade holiday crafts and the satisfaction of bringing a touch of winter magic into your home. Creating your own snowman appliqué allows you to infuse your personality and style into your holiday decorations, making them truly unique.

Happy Crocheting!
