A popular stitch in crochet is the shell stitch, which is a beautiful and versatile stitch that can be used to create a variety of projects.

What is the Crochet Shell Stitch?

The crochet shell stitch is a stitch pattern that creates a series of shells or arches, which resemble the shape of a scallop shell. The stitch pattern is created by working multiple stitches into the same stitch or space, and then skipping one or more stitches to create the arch or shell shape. The number of stitches worked into each shell and the number of stitches skipped between shells can be varied to create different effects.

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms)

To crochet the 5 dc shell stitch, you will need to be familiar with these basic crochet stitches:

Chain = ch

Single crochet = sc

Double crochet = dc

Materials Needed:

Worsted weight yarn of your choice. If you are a beginner, start with a light color like this one (sponsored link).

US size H or 5 mm crochet hook. This one (sponsored link)is one of my faves.

Scissors – Check out these ones (sponsored link).

Darning or tapestry needle to weave in the ends. These (sponsored link) ones are my go-to.

Here’s How to Create a Basic Shell Stitch:

 Chain a multiple of 6 stitches + 1. For example, I chained 25 (4 x 6) + 1.

Row 1: Skip the first three chains and work three double crochet (dc) into the fourth chain from the hook.  *Skip two chains, work one single crochet (sc) into the next chain, skip two chains, work 5 double crochet (dc) into the next chain. Repeat from * across the row. You should end the first row with a single crochet (sc).

Row 2: Ch 3, turn work, *work three double crochets (dc) into the first stitch. Skip 2 stitches, work one single crochet into the 3rd stitch of the previous row’s shell (this should be the middle of the shell). Skip 2 and work 5 double crochets into the next stitch (this should be the previous row’s single crochet (sc)) Repeat from * across the row.

 Row 3 and beyond: Repeat row 2 for as many rows as desired.

The crochet shell stitch is an enchanting technique that opens up a world of creative possibilities for your crochet projects. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crocheter, the shell stitch is a must-have skill in your repertoire. Start experimenting with different yarns, colors, and combinations to infuse your projects with your unique style. May your creations be as beautiful as your imagination allows!
