Materials Needed for This Project
Yarn – Less than 1 skein of any size 4 medium (worsted weight) yarn. I used I Love This Cotton Yarn in the color Rosey.
Crochet Hook – I used a size G/4mm ergonomic crochet hook.
Tapestry needle – Clover has some wonderful blunt end needles.
Scissors – for cutting off yarn. These ones are so cute!
Button – I used a 3/4 inch white button.
Sewing thread – to sew on the button. I had some Aunt Lydia’s size 10 white crochet thread on hand so that is what I ended up using, but any kind of thread will do.

Crochet Puff Stitch Sunglass Case Tutorial
Notes: The chain 1’s and chain 2’s at beginning of rows do not count as stitches for the stitch count. Finished dimensions of project are approximately 6 1/4 inches tall x 4 inches wide. Decreases start at row 35.
Start by chaining 16
Row 1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, *sc, ch 1, sk 1*, repeat *to* across row ending with a sc in last stitch (8 stitches).
Row 2: Ch 2, turn work. Starting in 1st ch sp, ps, *ch 1, sk next sc, ps in next ch sp*. Repeat *to* across row. Do NOT ch 1 after last puff stitch. Hdc in last stitch. (8 stitches). Tip: it is sometimes tricky to see where to put the last puff stitch, but keep in mind each row will have 7 puff stitches. Also, don’t forget to NOT ch 1 after last puff stitch and to hdc into the last stitch for a count of 8 stitches for each row.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn work. Sc in first ch sp, *skip over puff stitch, sc and ch 1 in the ch 1 sp between puff stitches*. Repeat *to* across row. Sc in last stitch. (8 stitches) Tip: The last sc is placed in the previous row’s 2nd chain.
Rows 4 – 34: Repeat rows 2 and 3. Row 34 will be a puff stitch row.
Row 35 is where we start decreasing for the flap.
Row 35: Ch 1, turn work. Sc2tog in first 2 chain spaces (the 2nd one will be in between the first 2 puff stitches), ch 1, sc and ch 1 in each of next 4 chain spaces (between puff stitches), sc2together in last 2 chain spaces. (6 stitches)
Row 36: Ch 2, turn work. Ps in 1st ch sp, ch 1, ps in each ch sp and ch 1 across row being sure not to ch 1 after last ps. Hdc in last stitch. There will be a total of 5 puff stitches in this row. (6 stitches)
Row 37: Ch 1, turn work. Sc2tog in first 2 chain spaces, ch 1, sc and ch 1 in each of next 2 chain spaces, sc2tog in last 2 chain spaces. (4 stitches)
Row 38: Ch 2, turn work. Ps and ch 1 in each ch sp across row, being sure not to ch 1 after last puff stitch, hdc in last stitch. There will be 3 puff stitches in this row. (4 stitches)
Row 39: Sc2tog in 1st 2 chain spaces, ch 1, sc2tog in last 2 chain spaces (2 stitches)
Row 40: Ch 2, turn work. Ps in ch sp, hdc in last stitch (2 stitches)
Row 41: Ch 1, turn work. Sc2tog. Ch 1 and fasten off.
Stitching Together
Fold bottom up to line up to the middle of row 34. Make sure it is wrong side out (the flat side is facing out). Sl st sides together down one side and fasten off. Then sl st up the other side and fasten off.
Weave in the ends while it is wrong side out. When finished, turn it right side out.
Sewing on the Button
Decide where to position the button. I am not sure if you can see the needle in the picture below. But it is placed in the middle of the 3rd puff stitch down, in the middle ps (from side to side). This is where you should position the button so that it will align with the chain space above the single puff stitch when the top is folded over.
Now fold the flap back up and sew the button onto the case as shown below. Make sure to fasten off the sewing thread on the inside of the case.
Now, fold the flap back down and insert the button through the space directly above the row with the single puff stitch.
It’s time to admire your work and show off your new crochet puff stitch sunglass case! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If you liked this one, check out another one of my sunglass case tutorials here.
