Materials Needed

Yarn – I used Lion Brand (sponsored link) Feels Like Butta in the color Pink. It is so soft and perfect for making soft, cuddly blankets, scarves and hats.

Crochet Hook – I used a 4 mm or size G crochet hook.

Scissors – To cut off the yarn before you tie off.

Tapestry or Darning Needle – To weave in the ends when finished with your project.

How to Crochet the Puff Stitch

Step 1: Yarn over (like you are going to make a half double crochet). Insert your hook into the indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (you’ll have 3 loops on your hook).

Step 2: Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop (you will now have 5 loops on your hook).

Step 3: Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop (you will now have 7 loops on your hook).

Step 4: Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up a loop (you will now have 9 loops on your hook).

Step 5: Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops.

Step 6: Chain 1 to secure the puff stitch. (This step is not always used depending on the pattern).

How to Crochet a Classic Puff Stitch Project in Rows

Start with a slip knot and chain in multiples of 2, then add 1 + 1 (you will have an even number).

Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in 2nd chain from hook, *chain (ch) 1, skip 1, sc in next chain*, repeat * to * across row. Sc in last stitch.

Row 2: Chain 2, turn your work, skip 1st stitch, ps in the next chain 1 space, *chain 1, skip next sc stitch, ps in the next chain 1 space *, repeat * to * across row. Do NOT chain 1 after the last puff stitch of the row. Place 1 hdc in last stitch.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn your work, sc in 1st stitch, *ch 1, skip the puff stitch, sc in next chain 1 space*, repeat * to * across row. For the last stitch, sc in the 2nd chain that you chained to begin previous row.

Row 4 and beyond: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the desired height of your project. You will want to end your project with a row 3 row for a smoother finished look.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

In conclusion, the crochet puff stitch is a delightful addition to your crochet skills, allowing you to infuse your projects with depth and character. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crocheter, this unique stitch opens up a world of creative possibilities. May your future projects be filled with beautiful, plush textures!

Happy Crocheting!
