As the leaves begin to change colors and the air takes on a crisp, autumn chill, it’s the perfect time to bring some cozy charm into your home. What better way to embrace the spirit of the season than by crafting your very own crochet pumpkins? These adorable and versatile decorations are not only a delight to create but also a timeless addition to your fall decor collection. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking for a fun and easy project, this crochet pumpkin will take no time at all to create. It is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter when finished. In this post, I will guide you through this easy crochet pumpkin pattern that will add a touch of handmade warmth to your home.
**All crochet stitches and terms are in US terms.**
Materials Needed for this Project
Yarn of your choice – For the Pumpkin, I used size 3 (Light) weight 100% cotton yarn by KC (Exclusive to Joann) in the color Canyon. For the stem leaf I used Peaches & Creme (Walmart) in the color Rosemary. ** Note: you could use any scrap yarn you have for this project as this pattern does not use much yarn, especially the stem leaf!
**Tip: If you use a larger weight yarn and a larger hook, you will have a larger pumpkin. As long as you follow the basic pattern, you can scale it to however large or small you want it.
3.75 MM Crochet hook (sponsored link). I prefer the ergonomic ones, but any will do.
Darning or tapestry needle (sponsored link) to weave in the ends and sew up the top and bottom.
Scissors (sponsored link) to cut off the yarn.
Cinnamon stick (optional) for the stem.
Polyester Fiber Fill (sponsored link) for the stuffing.
Tip: You can use whatever you prefer to “decorate” the pumpkin with. For example, instead of using a cinnamon stick, you could use a small twig from your yard . Or you could crochet the stem in a different color. I have even used a wine cork for a larger pumpkin. Also, instead of the stem leaf, you could tie twine around your stem and make a pretty bow –or you could do both!
Crochet Stitches Used for This Pattern
Before you begin, make sure you are familiar with the following crochet stitches and terms (US):
Slip knot
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sc blo = single crochet back loop only
sc flo = single crochet front loop only
sl st = slip stitch
Steps to Create This Easy Crochet Pumpkin
Slip knot and Ch 15 – Make sure you leave a 10 to 12 inch tail for sewing later.
Row 1: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and sc in back loop of ch. (see pic below) Repeat across row. Stitch count will be 14.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn work, sc flo in 1st stitch, repeat across row.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn work, sc blo in 1st stitch. repeat across row.
Rows 4 – 25 Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 25 rows, or the length is approximately double the width. Be sure to stop when the end tail will be on the same side of the work as your beginning tail.
Sewing and Stuffing
Fold the piece in half with the wrong side facing out (the side you will not want to face out when finished). Next, slip stitch the two ends together (14 stitches).
Remove crochet hook from working yarn. Now turn the work inside out so that the right side (the side you want to see when finished) is facing out. Next, using your blunt darning needle, weave in and out of every other stitch going around one end of your work.
Pull tight to close. Make sure to add a couple of stitches going across to fully close the hole and fasten off. You can then tuck any remaining tail inside of the work.
Stuff the open end.
Attach the darning needle to the tail at this end and weave in and out of each stitch around (same as other end). Pull tight to close leaving enough of a gap to fit whatever stem you are going to use.
Place your stem in the open hole and then pull the yarn tighter around the stem to secure. Here I also used some craft glue around the stem to ensure it wasn’t going to fall out.
**Note: If you are going to crochet a stem, you can just attach it by sewing it around the top of the hole.
Make sure you have fastened off the working yarn and tuck tail inside pumpkin.
How to Crochet the Stem Leaf
Slip knot and ch 10 leaving enough tail to attach to pumpkin.
Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and place 2 sc’s. Place 2 sc’s in each stitch across (stitch count will be 18).
Ch 1 and fasten off leaving enough tail to attach to pumpkin.
Note: ** It’s supposed to be curling up – that is what makes it a cute little detail for this project.
Next, attach the leaf to the pumpkin by using the darning needle to weave in the 2 tails as close as possible to the stem on one side of the pumpkin. Make sure to fasten off and tuck the tails into the pumpkin.
That’s it! You’re done making this easy crochet pumpkin. Hope you enjoyed this simple free pattern.
Happy Crocheting!
